Handmade traditional Tamegroute pottery - each piece is a work of art.
Tamegroute is a village in Southern Morocco famous for it's unique pottery handmade by seven families in a signature green shade. The Artisans source all their raw materials from nature. Clay is collected from the Draa river bed, the signature green glaze contains a high proportion of manganese, silica, cobalt, a hint of copper, barley flour, and a particular type of rock found in local mines a few hundred kilometers away. The concoction is mixed with water in a huge basin and left to thicken for about a week. But it’s the firing process that is thought to be key to the multi-shade green color that has yet to be replicated elsewhere.
The small amount of copper combined with the clay out of the Draa river bed is what is responsible for the characteristic green hue. When the copper is replaced with iron oxide it produces more of a brown or olive coloured result. Every piece of pottery is submerged into the mix using their hands and then dried in the sun, at ths point, the glaze will have a matt blue-grey colour. Only after it is baked at high temperatures in one of the seven families ovens will it change to the typical green hue.
Tamegroute pottery is best described as 'Perfectly Imperfect' with no two pieces ever being the same - each piece has it's own traits, marks and flaws. It's these individual flaws that make Tamegroute so unique and desirable.
